How to Create Your Own Brand Board

Making a mood board for your brand and don’t know what to add to it?

Creating a vision board can be super helpful in identifying a general vibe for the creative direction of your branding project. I create one with every client before we get into the design phase, because it helps us get on the same page aesthetically, which makes for a smoother ride as we design and refine, because we nailed the early stages of ideation!

Plus — it’s a ton of fun to start each project with a collaborative mood board. My clients love it!

When starting your mood board, I highly suggest using Pinterest to collect your ideas into one main hub. Then you can scroll through your board and see any consistencies, thus getting inspired to create the brand that fits your desired mood!

But what should go into your brand board? Here’s what I recommend!

FONT INSPO: Typography, quotes, links to pretty fonts, etc. This helps your designer to identify the style of font you’re drawn to, which helps us create a bomb logo!

COLOR PALETTE IDEAS: Whether it’s actual hex codes or just hues you like, it’s great to help your designer by adding photos that direct towards a general color theme.

LOGOS YOU LIKE: This may be controversial, but I like to have my clients add logos that inspire them. It helps me see what layouts they enjoy, as well as get inspo for designs that they’re drawn to! It’s important to note that you should never request for your designer to copy a logo you see on Pinterest — just point them in a general direction that you feel is right, and let their creativity do the rest.

ETCETERA: I always tell my clients: “anything you like, add it to the board!” So… we get lots of photos that aren’t necessarily design-centric, but they still help to curate a cool aesthetic! Then their vision board feels well-rounded — and perfectly Instagram-able!
